HOME OF THE BULLDOGS

Monday October 23, 2017

 3rd Period PAWS

Today in history… The Senate passed a $5.98 billion supplemental Lend-Lease Bill on October 23, 1941, bringing the United States one step closer to direct involvement in World War II. The Lend-Lease Act External, approved by Congress in March 1941, had given President Roosevelt virtually unlimited authority to direct material aid such as ammunition, tanks, airplanes, trucks, and food to the war effort in Europe without violating the nation’s official position of neutrality. The supplemental bill brought the amount of available aid to nearly $13 billion. This aid was intended to assist in the defense of nations whose security was deemed vital to the security of the United States. President Roosevelt, who favored U.S. intervention in WWII, advocated creating the program as a way to provide indirect support for the Allies without engaging the U.S. in a war for which there was not yet overwhelming public support.

Hello VUSD Families,

As you probably remember, VUSD has been evaluating our school start times with the intent to create optimal learning environments for our students. Significant research shows that the circadian rhythm (or sleep cycle) for humans changes during the adolescent years. While young children typically are naturally wide awake early in the morning, teens biologically struggle with waking early, regardless of the time they go to sleep. Research shows that aligning school start times to better fit students' biological rhythms results in improved student performance and success.

VUSD has been evaluating school start times for over two years. This evaluation included:

  • reviewing extensive research
  • recommendations from health organizations like the National Sleep Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control, and the American Academy of Pediatrics
  • school district transportation
  • cost analysis
  • feedback from principals
  • polls for students, parents and teachers

The VUSD Board of Trustees have taken all of these into careful consideration and have voted to adjust school start times for the 2018-19 school year. In the year to come, we will work with VUSD staff, City Coach, athletics, Vacaville Police and Fire and other community organizations in preparation of these new times. We understand that this positive change for student learning requires some adjustments for our families and community partners. We appreciate your willingness to work with us in fitting our educational system to meet students' needs.

More information about school schedules for 2018-19, research, articles, legislation, health tips and news on later school start time can been found here.

Hola VUSD Familias,

Parking Information for Students

All student drivers are required to complete the Parking Pass Request Form to park on campus for the 2017-2018 school year. Click on the link below and complete the form. Parking passes will be distributed after school at a time to be announced in the bulletin. After parking passes have been distributed, students will not be permitted to park on campus in the student lot without having a parking pass hung from the rear view mirror or displayed in clear view on the dashboard. Parking will continue to be first come, first serve; having the pass does not guarantee that you will get a parking spot.  Students are reminded that designated student parking is on the east side of campus in the main parking lot and near the stadium. Students are not permitted to park in visitor’s parking or on the west side of campus. Students can register up to 2 vehicles but will only receive one parking pass. Failure to comply with these regulations could mean the loss of driving/parking privileges at Vacaville High School.
