Varsity 17-18.jpg

The Vacaville High School Cheerleaders main goal is to promote and uphold school tradition and spirit inside and outside of the VHS community. Our purpose is two-fold.  We provide entertainment and team support at various girls and boys athletic events throughout the year as well as work to create a sense of good sportsmanship among the VHS students. The Varsity Squad includes junior and seniors members and the Junior Varsity Squad includes freshman and sophomores members.  For further information, please contact Robyn Thomas, VHS Cheer Advisor, at RobynT@vacavilleusd.org

Tryout Information

WHO CAN TRY OUT?

Any Vacaville High School student or incoming freshman is eligible to tryout. Grade requirements are based on the 3rd quarter report card. Eligibility includes a minimum 2.0 GPA and no “Fs” in any class (including ALPHA).

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?
A positive attitude, a willingness to try and learn new things is a must!

WHAT IS THE SELECTION PROCESS?
All candidates will be required to learn the sideline dance, basic jumps and 2-3 sidelines.  There will be an opportunity to show off your tumbling – it is not mandatory but helpful in evaluating your skills.  Freshman candidates, JV candidates and Varsity candidates will be taught together, but judged separately.  Clinics are run by the cheer coaches and outgoing seniors cheerleaders.  Candidates will be judged by independent professionals who possess a strong background in cheerleading.  This creates a fair and quality tryout for all those participating. The possibility of a Freshmen team will be decided on the day of final tryouts.  Final selection is based on the following criteria:

  • Clinic Score:  Candidates will be observed and scored during the entire week of tryouts for their effort, enthusiasm, cooperation and overall attitude. (50 pts)
  • Judge’s Decisions:

At the final tryout, all candidates will be required to perform the mini cheer, game actions, jumps and sideline dance.  The judges will be looking at the following categories (50 pts):

  • Confidence/Projection of voice
  • Knowledge of cheer, game actions & fight song
  • Skill (technique)
  • Jumps (required)
  • Advanced Jumps & Tumbling (Optional)

JUDGES DECISIONS ARE FINAL!  We know and appreciate the effort that goes into trying out for the VHS Cheerleading Squad. Unfortunately, not every candidate will make the team and there will be no individual feedback given concerning why someone did or did not make the squad.  All sessions during tryouts are closed to the public.  All candidates must attend the meeting and all clinic days or they will not be eligible for final tryouts on Friday.

Please listen to the daily bulletin for more information on when tryout packets will be available in the Jepson & VHS offices
