Monday January 22, 2018

2nd Period PAWS

Today in History… On January 22, 1912, the nearly twenty thousand residents of the city of Key West, Florida, located on a small island some 128 miles south of the Florida peninsula, observed the completion of an overseas rail connection to the mainland. The Florida East Coast Railway External served the island until 1935, when it was destroyed by a hurricane. It was replaced in 1938 by the Overseas Highway, built on the foundation of the old railroad bed. This system of forty-two bridges, which connects the Florida Keys to the mainland, is one of the longest over-water roads in the world.

1st Period PAWS

Today in History… No writer has the ability to evoke a sense of horror and dread more effectively than Edgar Allan Poe, born on January 19, 1809, in Boston, Massachusetts. Poe’s parents were actors. Their brilliant and unstable son grew up to be a romantic poet, a master of macabre tales, the originator of the modern detective story, and an acute literary critic, editor, and journalist. Orphaned at age two, Poe grew up in the Richmond, Virginia External home of a childless couple, merchant John Allan and his wife Frances. His foster parents treated him well, though Frances was Poe’s primary source of affection. Allan paid for Poe’s education at schools in England and in Virginia. Poe showed an early gift for language and Allan enrolled him in the University of Virginia in February 1826.

6th Period PAWS

Today in History… On January 18, 1919, a few months after the end of World War I, leaders from the Allied nations began a series of discussions that became known as the Paris Peace Conference to settle issues raised by the war and its aftermath. Preceded by a series of armistices in September, October, and November 1918, that ended World War I, the Paris Peace Conference brought together representatives from the victorious nations. Russia had withdrawn from the fighting and was not invited. Because Allied leaders held Germany responsible for the war, German leaders attended only the conclusion of the discussions.

Parking Information for Students

All student drivers are required to complete the Parking Pass Request Form to park on campus for the 2017-2018 school year. Click on the link below and complete the form. Parking passes will be distributed after school at a time to be announced in the bulletin. After parking passes have been distributed, students will not be permitted to park on campus in the student lot without having a parking pass hung from the rear view mirror or displayed in clear view on the dashboard. Parking will continue to be first come, first serve; having the pass does not guarantee that you will get a parking spot.  Students are reminded that designated student parking is on the east side of campus in the main parking lot and near the stadium. Students are not permitted to park in visitor’s parking or on the west side of campus. Students can register up to 2 vehicles but will only receive one parking pass. Failure to comply with these regulations could mean the loss of driving/parking privileges at Vacaville High School.
