PAWS Information

PAWS.jpg

Vacaville High School introduces PAWS. PAWS stands for Period of Academics with Support. This year we have created a schedule that includes time within the school day for students to take care of some of their academic needs. A PAWS period is scheduled every day (except Wednesday) after 3th period. Students will report to their regular classes for PAWS on a rotating basis according to the schedule on the facing page. During this PAWS period students will have the opportunity to:
- make up tests, quizzes and other assignments
- work on homework (independently or with assistance)
- get extra help from teachers and/or student tutors
- conduct research
- work on group projects
- organize materials
- read approved materials silently

PAWS is very definitely NOT time for socializing or engaging in any behavior that distracts from the academic nature of this period. Violators will face serious consequences. Students might want to think of PAWS as a “double-fine” zone in terms of consequences for unacceptable behavior.
Procedures are in place that may allow students to choose (with permission) the class to which to report during the tutorial period. (See the “How to Get and Use a PAWS Pass” page.)

How to Get and Use a “Regular” PAWS Pass
If you wish to report to a class for PAWS other than the one you are scheduled to attend, you must plan ahead. Steps one and two below must be completed no later than 7:45 a.m. on the day you would like to use the PAWS Pass. Ideally you will complete the process the day before you hope to use the PAWS Pass.

Follow these simple steps to obtain a PAWS Pass:
  1. Seek permission from the “requesting teacher” (the teacher whose class you’d like to attend). If this teacher approves, he or she will sign a golden-rod PAWS Pass and give it to you.
  2. Present the PAWS Pass to the “releasing teacher” (the teacher whose PAWS class you are scheduled to attend but would like to be released from). If this teacher approves, he or she will sign the PAWS Pass and return it to you.
  3. Report directly to the class of the requesting teacher (the class you wanted to attend) for PAWS with your pass.

How to get a “Library” paws pass
If you’d like to report to the Library for PAWS (rather than the class you are scheduled to attend), you must plan ahead. Steps one, two and three below must be completed no later than 7:45 a.m. on the day you would like to use the PAWS Pass. Ideally you will complete the process the day before you hope to use the PAWS Pass.

 1. Seek a “Request for Library PAWS Pass” from any of your teachers who can verify that you have legitimate library business.* The teacher will give you a signed green “Request for Library PAWS Pass”.
 2. Take the green “Request for Library PAWS Pass” to the Library. If there is space available on the day you wish to report to the Library, you will receive a golden-rod PAWS Pass.
 3. Present the PAWS Pass to the “releasing teacher” (the teacher whose PAWS class you are scheduled to attend but would like to be released from). If this teacher approves, he or she will sign the PAWS Pass and return it to you.
 4. Report directly to the Library for PAWS with your pass.

*Library business includes research, school-related internet use and/or word processing.
