2nd Period PAWS

Today in History… On January 22, 1912, the nearly twenty thousand residents of the city of Key West, Florida, located on a small island some 128 miles south of the Florida peninsula, observed the completion of an overseas rail connection to the mainland. The Florida East Coast Railway External served the island until 1935, when it was destroyed by a hurricane. It was replaced in 1938 by the Overseas Highway, built on the foundation of the old railroad bed. This system of forty-two bridges, which connects the Florida Keys to the mainland, is one of the longest over-water roads in the world.

Today in History… No writer has the ability to evoke a sense of horror and dread more effectively than Edgar Allan Poe, born on January 19, 1809, in Boston, Massachusetts. Poe’s parents were actors. Their brilliant and unstable son grew up to be a romantic poet, a master of macabre tales, the originator of the modern detective story, and an acute literary critic, editor, and journalist. Orphaned at age two, Poe grew up in the Richmond, Virginia External home of a childless couple, merchant John Allan and his wife Frances. His foster parents treated him well, though Frances was Poe’s primary source of affection. Allan paid for Poe’s education at schools in England and in Virginia. Poe showed an early gift for language and Allan enrolled him in the University of Virginia in February 1826.

Today in History… On January 18, 1919, a few months after the end of World War I, leaders from the Allied nations began a series of discussions that became known as the Paris Peace Conference to settle issues raised by the war and its aftermath. Preceded by a series of armistices in September, October, and November 1918, that ended World War I, the Paris Peace Conference brought together representatives from the victorious nations. Russia had withdrawn from the fighting and was not invited. Because Allied leaders held Germany responsible for the war, German leaders attended only the conclusion of the discussions.

Today in History… Alexander Hamilton, the first treasury secretary of the United States, was born on January 11 in either 1755 or 1757, on the Caribbean island of Nevis in the British West Indies. Hamilton claimed 1757 as his birth year, but probate papers recorded shortly after his mother’s death indicate that 1755 is the correct year. Hamilton was born out of wedlock and his father abandoned the family in 1765. His mother died in 1768, leaving him an orphan at a young age.

1st Period PAWS

Today in History… On January 8, 1815, Major General Andrew Jackson led a small, poorly-equipped army to victory against eight thousand British troops at the Battle of New Orleans. The victory made Jackson a national hero. Although the American victory was a big morale boost for the young nation, its military significance was minimal as it occurred after the signing (although before ratification) of the Treaty of Ghent that officially ended the war between the U.S. and Great Britain. The battle was fought before word of the Treaty reached the respective armies in the field. The anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans was widely celebrated with parties and dances during the nineteenth century, especially in the South.

**MENTAL HEALTH MONDAY**

As the new year settles in, take some time to make goals for yourself or for your new semester. With each goal take time and remember “My current situation is not my final destination” How you may feel right now is not how you might feel after you work hard to complete any goals you have in place. Good luck and Happy New Year’s!!

Today in history…On December 11, 1919, the citizens of Enterprise, Alabama, erected a monument to the boll weevil, the pest that devastated their fields but forced residents to end their dependence on cotton and to pursue mixed farming and manufacturing. Measuring an average length of six millimeters (one-quarter inch), the insect entered the United States via Mexico in the 1890s and reached southeastern Alabama in 1915. It remained the most destructive cotton pest in North America for much of the twentieth century.

Tuesday December 5, 2017

4th Period PAWS

Today in history…On December 5, 1776, Phi Beta Kappa External, America’s most prestigious undergraduate honor society, was founded. Organized by five students at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, Phi Beta Kappa was the nation’s first Greek letter society. From 1776 to 1780, members met regularly at William and Mary to write, debate, and socialize. They planned the organization’s expansion and established the characteristics typical of American fraternities and sororities: an oath of secrecy, a code of laws, mottoes in Greek and Latin, a badge and a seal, a special handclasp, and an elaborate initiation ritual.

Start Smart Classes are aimed at reducing the number of teen related injuries and death due to motor vehicles collisions.

As a follow up and response to the concerning incident this morning involving the arrest of a near a bus transit station, please see the update below. As always, we encourage parents to help students understand how to be aware of their surroundings, not engage with strangers and immediately tell adults about strange or threatening incidents. We appreciate the immediate action and support from Vacaville PD, and are glad that the suspect was identified.

THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE HAS BEEN POSTED BY THE VACAVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Two teenaged girls are to be commended for their quick thinking and actions yesterday, which have now led to the arrest of 29-year-old Vacaville resident Newton Payeah.

Yesterday morning while waiting for a bus at the Vacaville Transit Center on E. Monte Vista Avenue, Payeah approached two girls who were waiting for a bus to take them to school. He asked them if they would like to smoke marijuana with him and offered to give them a ride, identifying himself as an Uber driver. These brave young ladies did the right thing by not engaging him further and got on their bus when it arrived. They then reported what happened to an adult which resulted in police being called.

Our children's safety is extremely important to us and we immediately launched an investigation as to what occurred. Information was being shared on other social media platforms that in some situations was not correct. We want you to know we are committed to providing you information that is timely, accurate, and direct from the source on our social media platforms and sometimes that takes a little longer than we all may want, however this ensures accuracy in what's shared. Officers from our Youth Services Section were actively following up on the case when we learned Payeah returned to the transit center this morning. Officers immediately responded and safely took Payeah into custody. We were able to determine he does not work for Uber as a driver. Payeah was arrested for annoying a child under the age of 18 and booked into Solano County Jail. Below is a picture of Payeah at the time of his arrest and the car he arrived in.

This situation could have ended much different if not for the excellent decisions made by the girls. Please use this event to have those important conversations with your children about how to handle themselves should they ever be in similar circumstances.

Anyone with information regarding Payeah's actions is asked to contact Officer Erwin Ramirez at (707) 449-5200. Media inquiries can be directed to Lt. Mark Donaldson at (707) 449-5260.

No PAWS Today

Today in history… On November 15, 1777, the Second Continental Congress adopted the Articles of Confederation. Submitted to the states for ratification two days later, the Articles of Confederation were accompanied by a letter from Congress urging that the document…

…be candidly reviewed under a sense of the difficulty of combining in one general system the various sentiments and interests of a continent divided into so many sovereign and independent communities, under a conviction of the absolute necessity of uniting all our councils and all our strength, to maintain and defend our common liberties…

Although Congress debated the Articles for over a year, they requested immediate action on the part of the states. However, three-and-a-half years passed before ratification on March 1, 1781.

4TH Period PAWS

Today in history…On November 6, 1861, Jefferson Davis, who had been elected president of the Provisional Government on February 9, 1861—as a compromise between moderates and radicals—was confirmed by the voters for a full six-year term. By the time of his inauguration as full president on February 22, 1862, the confederate capital, which had originally been in Montgomery, Alabama, had been moved to Richmond, Virginia, in part to defend the strategically important Tredegar Ironworks.
