Today in history…On April 25, 1898, the United States formally declared war against Spain. The Monroe Doctrine, which since 1823 had viewed any European intervention in the Americas as a threat to U.S. security, coupled with the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine in Havana harbor, precipitated U.S. engagement. Coverage by Hearst newspapers and the nascent film industry solidified public support for involvement in Cuba’s struggle for independence.

Hunter Freeman is this week’s Student of the Week! Selected by Mrs. Carmona, Hunter is a hard-working and persistent student. Hunter's positivity inspires Mrs. Carmona every day. Keep on smiling!

This week’s Senior of the Week, nominated by Mrs. Farina, is Ian De Caro! As an AVID tutor he is selfless, kind, and a role model for our AVID juniors. He has been an invaluable resource for our students taking AP Chemistry and ensures that they know the material. He has assisted us in AVID activities and is such a great all around kid!

The Dive team selects Anabelle Norman for Female Athlete of the Week! Her dedication to dive has been unreal and her never give attitude has made her come so far this season. Anabelle continues to push herself and the team to do the best they can.

The track and field teams nominates Alex Benson as this week’s Male Athlete of the Week!  Alex has a team first mentality and has stepped up on numerous occasions to help out the team this season.  Alex is an undeniable hard worker, and his efforts have translated into one of the top mile times in the section.  There are big things on the horizon for Alex Benson, and the track and field team commends him for his enthusiasm and commitment to the team this season.

Today in history…Today, the Library of Congress celebrates its birthday. On April 24, 1800, President John Adams approved the appropriation of $5,000 for the purchase of “such books as may be necessary for the use of congress.” The books, the first purchased for the Library of Congress, were ordered from London and arrived in 1801. The collection of 740 volumes and three maps was stored in the U.S. Capitol, the Library’s first home.
